Shakeh Martial Arts Systems is an eclectic American martial art born of the teachings of Grandmaster Randy Berenger and continued today by Todd Garrison. In 1995, Mr. Berenger was promoted to the title of “Soke”(system founder) 10th degree black belt and founder of Shakeh Martial Arts in the presence of Soke Michael Moore and The World Martial Arts Hall of Fame Sokeship Council. Todd Garrison was then promoted to the title of "Soke-Dai"(system inheritor). Mr. Garrison was awarded his 10th Degree Black Belt in Shakeh Martial Arts Systems by Grandmaster Randy Berenger in 2010.
Shakeh(Šaké) means “claw” in the Lakota Sioux American Indian language. The eagle’s claw represents the systems’ American heritage. The separate digits of the claw represent the effective use of various martial art styles working together.
Every martial art style is range and circumstantially dependent therefore one must study various arts in order to flow from range to range seamlessly. Everyone is created physically different. Everyone has a personal combat recipe. Even though there are basic truths that allow the body to fight efficiently, there are some techniques or principles that work better for one body type compared to another. The outcome is a flavor of combat tailor made for the individual, not to accumulate techniques but to understand their essence and effectiveness at different ranges of combat. It is not the style or technique that is important but the simplicity and effectiveness during combat which counts.
For over two decades, Todd Garrison and Randy Berenger have been "brothers" in martial arts. They were both students of Sifu Michael Moore who was a Jeet Kune Do certified full instructor under Sifu Larry Hartsell. Although they've been trained and ranked in various arts, their teachings have always come back to the art and philosophy of Bruce Lee's Jeet Kune Do.
